Built on experience

Betterbility was co-founded by a senior physiotherapist and a senior occupational therapist. Through 15 combined years of working with ageing clients navigating changing mobility needs, our founders saw the same challenge repeat itself: people forced to choose between a walker and a wheelchair, despite needing both in the same day.

Betterbility brings to market a single device designed to adapt to changing needs, combining walking support and seated mobility. Backed by clinical experience, firsthand insight, and a belief that freedom shouldn't have an expiry date, Betterbility exists to help people move through life with greater confidence and independence.

A carbon-fibre 4-in-1 electric walker and powered wheelchair — Australia's first device of its kind.

It combines a walking frame with powered assistance, so you can walk under your own power and switch to being driven when fatigue sets in, without changing devices.

People whose mobility isn't fixed through the day — able to walk at times, needing to sit and be driven at others.

That includes older adults, people with disability, and anyone managing fatigue or reduced endurance who doesn't fit neatly into "just needs a walker" or "needs a wheelchair".

Most powered walkers on the Australian market offer two modes — walk unassisted, or sit and drive — with no motor-assisted walking and no carer-assist function.

The Betterwalker adds two capabilities nothing else in this price band offers: powered walking assistance, and motor-assisted carer support with automatic downhill braking.

Generally yes, under "mid-cost assistive technology".

At $4,800–$5,800, it sits comfortably inside that band.

NDIS assistive technology between $1,500 and $15,000 requires a quote plus written evidence — a report from an OT or physiotherapist supporting functional need — before funds are released.

It isn't a pre-approved list item.

Yes — mobility equipment like the Betterwalker is eligible under the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme, part of Support at Home.

Funding tier is approved as part of your aged care assessment, and it's separate from your regular quarterly Support at Home budget.

From 1 July 2026: Low ($513), Medium ($2,052) and High ($15,390).

The Betterwalker sits within the High tier, with headroom remaining.

There's no fixed funding band for DVA, private health or compensable claims.

A formal report isn't always mandatory, but a treating therapist's recommendation is standard practice and often required by the funder or insurer directly.

For NDIS and Support at Home, yes — that's a feature of both schemes generally, not something specific to us.

For private purchase it's not mandatory, but we strongly recommend an assessment first to confirm fit and safe operation.

On a funded pathway, the real comparison usually isn't $2,200 versus $4,800 — it's which device your funder approves.

A rollator, a transit chair and an entry powerchair bought separately over time can add up to more than the Betterwalker alone, before accounting for storing three devices and a second assessment process.

It's also a clinical trade-off: a basic frame doesn't help once fatigue sets in, and jumping straight to a full power wheelchair removes walking as an option entirely, which isn't necessary for everyone in this position.

It's classified as a Class I medical device and is completing inclusion on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) — a standard step for medical devices sold in Australia.

It isn't available for supply until that's complete. Get in touch and we'll let you know current timing.

It's the lowest-risk classification tier under Australia's therapeutic goods framework.

It still requires formal inclusion on the ARTG before the product can be legally supplied here — that process is under way.

Yes, it carries CE conformity marking.

That's a separate certification to Australia's TGA/ARTG process, and doesn't substitute for it — Australian supply requires ARTG inclusion regardless of CE status.

No — and we won't claim it does.

Falls are a significant injury burden in Australia (AIHW recorded 248,211 fall-related hospitalisations in 2023–24), and fatigue is a recognised contributing factor, but the Betterwalker is not marketed or evidenced as a falls-prevention device.

Any clinical rationale around fatigue and safety should be assessed and documented by your treating therapist for your individual circumstances.

No. It's a stability feature — gentle motor resistance so the frame doesn't run ahead of you on a slope — not a clinical or rehabilitation treatment.

It shouldn't be described as one in a therapist's supporting report either.

One adult user up to 120 kg, whose mobility changes through the day — able to walk at times, needing seated support at others — who can operate the controls and navigate safely.

That includes many older adults, people with disability, and anyone managing fatigue or reduced endurance.

Minors, people with severe cardiac conditions, and anyone unable to navigate the device safely.

It's also not intended for two users at once, users over 120 kg, rough off-road terrain, or inclines beyond 10°.

No — it's designed and rated for a single user.

This needs individual assessment — safe operation of a powered device depends on specific physical and cognitive capacities, which is exactly what an OT or physiotherapist assessment is for.

Because it covers walking, powered wheelchair use, carer-assisted support and stability assistance in one frame, many people won't need to be reassessed for a completely different device as their mobility changes through the day or over time.

Any change in your condition should still be reviewed by your treating therapist.

The best way is a mobility assessment with an OT or physiotherapist.

They can assess your walking distance, fatigue pattern, and the environments you use day to day against what the device is designed for.

For NDIS or Support at Home funding, yes — both require supporting clinical evidence.

For private purchase it's not mandatory, but strongly recommended.

Trials currently happen through a supervised demonstration programme with treating therapists and rehabilitation services, rather than as a general walk-in trial.

Ask your OT or physio, or contact us and we'll help arrange access to a local demonstration unit.

The report and a formal quote go to your NDIS planner or plan manager, or your Support at Home provider's care manager, as part of the funding request.

We're happy to liaise directly with your care team, and we provide a report template and full technical specification on request — though the clinical judgement in the report has to be your therapist's own.

This varies by scheme and individual circumstances — your OT, support coordinator or care manager will have the most accurate timing for your situation.

Plug the supplied charger into the charging port and a wall socket.

A full charge takes approximately 2–3 hours.

Only use the supplied charger — other chargers, or charging through the USB-C port, can damage the device.

Yes — the battery is a removable lithium pack (24V, 6.6Ah), so a second charged pack is a quick swap if you need it.
